The Question is Protocol

I am sending you an alternative to the way things move
It will help us speak the dirty German words fluently tonight

Our blue faces must become the art of a dead moth clinging to
The bone-white white noise of our teeth melting like so many popsicles

Our own sentences, our own blood is a question of protocol
A mountain pass is a beautiful woman whispering nothing but snow

A parking lot is like a strange man kneeling in the electric mud
A lost boy is a frenzy of stupid bugs hitting a windshield at 70 mph

We were just getting back schizophrenic from Antwerp
& then it hits us—Roaches check in but they never check out!

Here the red hair of silence is always running the water
& the tubs overflow with the soft kiss of a tree line

Our words are evidence; our purpose is a gaunt hooded man
I guess we’ll have to figure it out in the dark like two figurines
