I heard the football game

“Football combines the two worst things about America: it is violence punctuated by committee meetings.” – George Will

I heard the football game
and the football band
from my yard and wondered
if the players took their
plays from Mao’s little red book

Hoist them by their own petard!
and other cheers
rang out
from the grandstand

But actually down on that field they plot
their moves from Gertrude Stein’s
autobiography
of her
life partner
which is written about herself

She is dressed
in Permian Basin shoulder pads
and Hemingway wants to call all the plays
but asks Gertrude,
repeatedly Gertrude,
is this okay?
from over on the bench in his
Tom Landry hat blowing the whistle on the whole
Italian army
play-action Caporetto punt return

Ernest,
Alice B. says
first you shall refrain
from calling Gertrude anything other
than Miss Stein

Hoist your wine glass to her portrait
if you must
but let her let the players play
their parts
willingly will they do her work and
guard
against the blitz and the sack-like tooth
brush
moustache generals setting bushmen on
to crank
your Rhino-hunting rover with the grain
alcohol radiator

Listen to Nick Adams and
his row boat libretto
Jake Barns halfway in
up to his waist in wool wine
skins
from the Pyrenees
passed around the flatbed
to the trabajadores

All on a fall day
all on a day in the fall
when the air, crisp and sere
is filled with noises that we pour
like libations
on the tomb of the year

I am ready to catch that forward pass
and dance
with a pilgrim buckle
and a pioneer wink
like Sandburg it’s time to spill some
ink.
