Library Bindings

He hitchhiked to New York and explored the city from a 4th floor nest in Hell’s Kitchen. After a time, he figured out a way to steal books from the library—the one with the lions in front: Look Homeward, Angel, Ulysses, and one more he loved. For years he lugged them around in a cheap suitcase on his nestless flights across America. Late on a rainy night in Tacoma, he dropped them into a book return slot and stood for a long moment in the cold mist, looking at what he’d done. They were all still so far from home.
