Third Shift

We fold his heart into a red crane;

                        wring            out

                                                                                                each

                                                                                                                                    breath.

He waits for his wife in the circle drive,

                                                burns            a cigarette—

                                                                                                            witchgrass from a whispering hay hook.

Stacy R. Nigliazzo’s debut poetry collection Scissored Moon was published in 2013 by Press 53. It was named Book of the Year by The American Journal of Nursing.
