Daybreak in the valley

Clouds shilly
            over small fry
                        a shoal of fish
                                    a mackerel sky.

A river meanders
            an oxbow lake
                        distending
                                    fields agape.

Mist suspended
            shadow of swift
                        in shallow pools
                                    minnows drift.

In a heron’s eye
            silver fish stilled
                        a hypnotiser’s
                                    wish fulfilled.

Sun red rising
            feathered flight
                        petals fanned
                                    of a red kite.
