Pipeline Rapids Walkway

Pipe-walking alongside
the raging James River
            thriving with herons, I rediscover
and our graffiti, reading
James, is that you I smell?
across the canal.
            There is nothing unheroic
about you or your bridge,
            threading water along the margins.

Graduates sunbathe on rocks upstream,
knowing you exist more for us
            than Hart Crane’s Brooklyn,
still looking for buyers.

M. N. O’Brien received his B.A. from Roanoke College, where his work was published in On Concept’s Edge and received the Charles C. Wise Poetry Award.
