The Detective

His fedora sagged about his head, dripping water across the floor. His trench coat, too, was sodden, and here and there wisps of steam rose off it, escaping into the coal-black air. His revolver looked intact, but the cartridges had burst and were spilling gunpowder. And his skin, puckered and…cooked? Well this was simply too much.

It was the easiest case Maude had ever solved.

“Hardboiled!” she shouted. Her partner jumped away from the flip chart and gave her a high five—and the Librarian Association’s monthly game of genre Pictionary was won.

Jeff H. is a high school English teacher. He’s working on making drabbles and runs with his wife, a dietitian. They write about cooking, writing, and everything else.
