Simple Subtraction

This is how we slowly
lose everything
either we misplace
a book or the memory
of a face or we
forget to call
for days and years
on end
or just maybe
we even forget
we were once
a baby
and then someone
has to remind us
to listen
to a complaint
or a compliment
and finally we shed
thoughts of the dead
and no longer smile
when we think
of a toast
that was made
when former friends
were wed
and just when
we think
we have found happiness
it turns out to be
all in our head
